Which Bey should I start with?
Beyblade X is quick to explain: two players launch their Beys into a stadium at the same time, and whoever gets 4 points first wins. Here is what you really need to get started.
What you need to play
- A Bey: the spinning top made of Blade, Ratchet and Bit.
- A launcher: it winds up the Bey and launches it.
- An Xtreme Stadium: only this stadium has the gear rail for the Xtreme Dash, the special feature of Beyblade X. Stadiums from older Beyblade series don’t have it.
Two players need two Beys and two launchers, but only one stadium.
Which pack is worth it?
- Battle Set: a stadium, two Beys and two launchers in one box, e.g. Hasbro’s “Xtreme Battle Set” or a Takara Tomy “Battle Entry Set”. The easiest start, especially for siblings or friends.
- Starter: one Bey with a launcher. The right choice if you already have a stadium.
- Booster: just the Bey, without a launcher. Good as a second or third Bey.
- Random Booster: you don’t know in advance which Bey is inside. Not ideal to start with, because you easily get duplicates.
- Deck Set: three Beys for the 3-on-3 format played at tournaments. More something for later.
What’s new right now and what’s coming next is in the release calendar.
Which Bey to start with?
The honest answer: the one you like best. All parts can be swapped freely later, so you can hardly buy the wrong one.
If you want to play it safe: these Beys are available from both Hasbro and Takara Tomy, and their Blades are among the most successful in tournaments:
- Wand Wizard 5-70DB – Stamina, Takara Tomy UX-03, Hasbro G1537
- Sterling Wolf 3-80FB – Stamina, Takara Tomy UX-08, Hasbro G1674
- Scale Shark 4-50UF – Attack, Takara Tomy UX-15, Hasbro G2731
- Soar Phoenix 9-60GF – Attack, Takara Tomy BX-23, Hasbro F9324
As for the type: Stamina and Defense Beys are more forgiving of launch mistakes. Attack Beys are more spectacular but take some practice to hit the rail and catch the opponent. What the types mean is explained in the basics, and what is winning tournaments right now in the meta tier list.
Right-spin or left-spin?
Almost all Beys spin to the right. Left-spin Beys like Cobalt Dragoon need a launcher that spins to the left. It comes with the starter or set of a left-spin Bey; sold separately it is called e.g. “Winder Launcher L” or “String Launcher L”. Left-spin Beys can’t be launched with a normal launcher.
Which launcher?
- Ripcord launcher (Takara Tomy: “Winder Launcher”): comes with most starters. You pull out a toothed plastic strip. Easiest for kids.
- String launcher with a cord: more power, but it takes some practice. Many tournament players use one.
- Launcher grip: attaches to the launcher so you can hold it straight and steady.
All launchers, grips and stadiums are explained in the Accessories tab.
Tips for parents
- Age: Hasbro recommends Beyblade X for ages 8 and up. Because of small parts that can be swallowed, it is not suitable for children under 3.
- Only play in the stadium: the Beys spin very fast and can fly out. Don’t aim at people or animals, and don’t lean over the stadium with your face when launching.
- Only buy originals: cheap sets with lots of Beys are almost always fakes. How to spot them is explained in the guide Original or fake?.
- Hasbro or Takara Tomy? The parts are compatible. In Europe and America, stores sell Hasbro; in Asia, Takara Tomy. More in the guide Hasbro or Takara Tomy.
- Wishlist: with a free account on the wiki you can keep track of which Beys you already have and which ones are wanted. Handy before birthdays and holidays.
